Tømmerrenna i Vennesla

It's Easter vacation and my friend Alina and I are once again staying with my family at Aurebekk. We've been spending time with the kids, exploring the area, and watching a ton of Gossip Girl. On Wednesday we went for a trip with Anne Tone's family to Tømmerrenna in Vennesla. In the 1950s, tømmerrenna--the timber gutter--was used to float timber down from the forest to the river. Now it is a popular walking trail, and a really fun day trip.

We walked through the old timber flues, taking in the amazing views--and taking tons of pictures. My friend Emilie was kind enough to lend us her camera this week, and we had lots of fun with it. The trail started next to a waterfall, and we crossed two bridges and went through a tunnel before deciding to stop for lunch and turn around. The kids had a lot of fun, and enjoyed leading the way through the dark and somewhat scary tunnel. It was so small that we had to hunch over the whole time, and it became pitch black in the middle.

It wasn't a difficult walk, but it was lots of fun! This also wasn't our first experience with logs during our Easter stay. On our second day at Aurebekk, Alina and I ran into some of the other family members who are building a gapahuk (a sort of shelter). They had all sorts of machinery going to slice the timber into planks, and we offered to help. There was a giant pile of logs that needed to be cut into firewood, so they set us up with a machine that sliced them into pieces. We had such a good time, and stuck around for over an hour cutting up the wood. Gotta earn our keep somehow!

Turns out that wasn't our last experience with lumber either. After drafting this post, Anne Tone drove us into Mandal, but were delayed on the way out of Aurebekk due to a truck picking up logs. It was crazy to watch--like real life Tetris! I've never seen anything like that before, and afterwards we were all talking about how heavy the truck must be with all of that wood. These videos aren't great, but they're the best I could get from the car.

  1. Grandpa thought it funny how fascinated you were watching the loading of logs. Seeing that is quite common around here in Paul Bunyan country!!! :)

  3. That gutter is so cool! Did you have to walk up and then back down the same way? Is it steep?
