En Julefortelling

Every once in a while the NLC class does a lesenatt (reading night), where we all take turns reading something together, and then celebrate with pizza. Ananda and I always look forward to reading nights because we get to eat Chicken Taco Pizza--it's the best! Last week, we read a short Norwegian version of A Christmas Carol--En Julefortelling.

We read En Julefortelling to prepare, because on Thursday evening we went to see it at the theater in Kristiansand. I spent the day busily preparing for my trip north on Friday, and the last thing that I needed to do Thursday was send a Christmas package home. Sofia and I talked to Marianne and left for Kiwi right after dinner with Elise, expecting to be back in time for the 4:30 bus.

However, it took way longer than I thought to mail the package, with a never-ending stream of paperwork and Norwegian, and suddenly it was 4:15 and we were still 20 mins away from school. Luckily, Sofia called Marianne and she was able to pick all of us up--she had an extra ticket for Elise--in the minibus on the way to the theater. The show was really nice, the set was amazing, and they sang lots of Norwegian Christmas songs.

On a side note, something that I've found really interesting this year is the Christmas songs. I always think that it's incredibly hard to create new xmas songs--the classics and covers have something special about them, and the new, pop type songs todays artists try to release almost never have the right vibe, and never last year to year. Now, I've been exposed to so many Norwegian songs this year, and while they're not new, they're new to me, so I was expecting a similar feeling. Yet I've found that so many of them are so, so Christmas-y! I listen to them, and immediately feel the Christmas spirit. I just thought I'd share that because I think it's really cool. :)

At intermission, Sofia and I took a quick walk for some fresh air and had a nice walk through the beautifully lit up areas of Kristiansand. We left after the show and were back in time for evening meal, where gløgg and xmas cookies awaited us!
