Rainy Days
Part of being in NLC means that I have both a 'reading buddy' and a 'godfather' (aka designated friend for the first couple of weeks). They were both assigned today, and I spent my time between lunch and dinner reading with Kristine, who is in the Global class. She volunteered to be a reading friend, and I read her Harry Potter! It was very awkward at first, because we had never met, and I read like a five year old in Norwegian, but once we got going it was really fun! Some of the character names are different, and the one that really cracked me up was that Professor McGonagall was changed to Professor McSnurp. Every time I had to read her name we both started laughing, to the point where we'd see it coming up and just start cackling, knowing that I couldn't read it with a straight face. I'm looking forward to spending more time reading with Kristine. She also brought me chocolate, so what's not to like?
Today was a rainy, windy, wet day. Even so, ninety percent of the school decided to leave after lunch to go to the city and hangout/drink now that we are out of quarantine. (I just spent a good 30 seconds trying to figure out why my computer was telling me 'lunsj' was misspelled, until I finally realized it was in Norwegian. Guess I really am learning!)
My friends and I stayed to hang out with our 'godfathers' (due to a hilarious translation mishap, they are now referred to as 'daddies'--sorry!) and we had a great afternoon! I'm partnered with Cecilie, who is already a friend of mine, and we went with Ananda to the supermarket to get some essential goods--more whipped cream for our hot chocolate. It's about a fifteen minute walk there that we made in the pouring rain, but we still had a good time.
When we got back, the school was almost empty! So many people had gone out for the night, that there were only around 20 still here. We rounded them up in the lounge and had a school wide game of Hide and Seek! Two people searched, while the rest hid. All unlocked doors in the school were part of the game, but the dorms and laundry were out of bounds. It was so much fun, and kind of a bucket list experience--who hasn't wished they could run around their entire school playing games with their friends? We set timers for 12 minutes so that anyone left would come back, and went through five or so rounds of hide and seek. The best part was when the round started, and everybody sprinted out of the lounge as fast as they could, all trying to get to the best spots. It was a pretty random group of people, but a cool thing about this school is that I feel comfortable talking to everybody, so it was really easy to have a good time together. I hope we can keep having spontaneous fun throughout the year!
Sounds so fun! We spent a large portion of yesterday reading Harry Potter, too! We only have a few chapters left in Order of the Phoenix. The kids are totally cracking up at McSnurp!!! Keep us posted on other name changes as you find them :) Debbie
