Lista Fyr

Yesterday our principal took the NLC class on a day trip to Lista Fyr, a lighthouse about an hour and a half away. Friluftsliv has gone to Lista a few times, and I have been wanting to go for a while. Last week after Friluft came back from a trip I asked Marianne if we could go, and what do you know? NLC to Lista on this week's schedule!

We took one of the minibuses, and instead of going right to the lighthouse, we stopped in a nearby town where our principal's family was from. We walked around a little, and I saw the first flowers of spring. The area was quaint and very scenic, and Reidar took us to a small church that his family used to go to. It was a gorgeous day out and I'd borrowed Emilie's nice camera, so my friends and I had fun walking around and taking pictures.

We ate our lunches when we got back on the bus, and stopped once more, this time at a store called Trunken (The Trunk). It's an American themed store in an American themed area. Bjorn and I had a blast walking through and looking at all of the stereotypical American products. In the end I bought some candy and Cheetos, as well as a root beer. (It was strange seeing things that I'd sort of forgotten I'd been missing!)

When we finally reached the lighthouse, the weather had turned a bit, and it was very foggy by the coast. On the front lawn, there were hundreds of Norwegian flags. In the fog, it was a bit creepy--reminiscent of a graveyard--but we were told they were for an art exhibition.

Back home, we have a photograph on our dining room wall taken by my great grandfather when he visited Norway. It's from a window in what we were told was a Southern Norwegian lighthouse. Since coming here, I've been to Lindesnes and Ryvingen, and though I looked at every window, I couldn't find the one I was looking for. Here is the picture from home:

At Lista however, I finally found it! We took a bunch of pictures, and it was cool to make that connection to my family history. The top of the lighthouse was being painted, so we weren't able to go out on the ledge, but there wasn't much to see in the fog anyway. After hanging out in the lighthouse and checking out the small museum and gift shop, we headed home. It wasn't a very long trip, but it was a great way to spend the day!
