Dodgeball and Hockey and Soccer, Oh My!

Despite it starting almost a month ago, I attended my first Ballgames class on Wednesday.  I missed the first class when we were at Ryvingen, then I was sick, and then the teacher's kid was sick so he wasn't there. This past Wednesday however, it seemed as though everything would work out.

I showed up a little before six, which is the time on my schedule, but when I walked in, everyone was already running around playing dodgeball. I awkwardly scooted along the edge of the gym to the teacher, and asked him if this was Ballgames--which he said it was--and if it had already started--which he said it had. I guess in one of the first classes they changed the time to half an hour earlier, but I either hadn't been notified, or hadn't understood the Norwegian message.

The teacher completely understood, and I was able to jump right into the next game we played, which was floor hockey. We set up small nets in each corner of the gym, where one was worth 1 point, the other 2 points, and each team had to score exactly 15. I had a great time, but it reminded me of how much I miss playing ice hockey. I wonder if the lake freezes over in the winter, or if there are any opportunities for skating.

Interestingly, this is my only class where I am the only NLC student there. I definitely feel like my comprehension is increasing, because our teacher explained everything in Norwegian, and I was able to get the gist for the most part. For the third game however, he put a net at each end of the gym, and then put two benches on their sides in the center. He began explaining the game, which was like soccer, but each team could either hit the net, or the opposite bench for points. He needed to repeat himself over five times (in Norwegian) because nobody understood. (Meanwhile I'm standing there thinking, 'If they're confused, what does that make me?'). It ended up being a really fun game, though my soccer skills are a bit rusty!

Before we ended we teamed up for a mini soccer tournament. There were two teams of three, and two of four. My team of three went first against three of the most athletic, skilled people in the class. While we were joking around and chatting, they were discussing strategy. Somehow, we scored first and won, but I still have no idea how that happened. I think that Ballgames is my favorite valgfag--elective--and I am really looking forward to next week!
